If you don’t have a working printer at home, you can go to any branch location of the library and use one of their computers to print the files. You do have to become a library member (if you aren’t already) and printing is 15 cents per page.  Or you can use the library’s copier to make a copy once you get there, come a little early if you need to do that.

If we have some new beginners, we’ll  go over a few basic chords, how to hold the ukulele, and basic strumming.  We always start out with a couple of easy songs to warm up.  We will have some intro/riff tabs and some fancy strumming riffs in some of these songs, but Beginner’s don’t be alarmed!  These riffs are optional and you can still have a lot of fun and sound good playing these songs without them.

More experienced members can use this as a warmup, and this is a good time to ask questions if you have any.  I will bring a sample song written in tab so we can “de-mystify tablature”. If you’re not interested in learning to read tab, don’t worry, it won’t take long to explain this, and then we’ll move on to other things.

Here’s the list of songs for this meeting:

  • Jambalaya
  • Amazing Grace
  • Jamaica Farewell
  • Sloop John B
  • You Are My Sunshine
  • Walking After Midnight
  • Folsom Prison Blues
  • I Walk the Line
  • This Land Is Your Land
  • I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing
  • Ukulele Blues
  • I Love a Ukulele

These are mostly old favorites we’ve done before, the new ones are: “Sloop John B”, “Ukulele Blues”, and “I Love a Ukulele”. I’ve updated the instrumental section in “Jambalaya” and “You Are My Sunshine”, so if you’re planning on just printing the new songs, you might want to print those two old ones also, or just write the changes on your existing copy.

More experienced members are also welcome to participate in this part of the meeting (think of it as a warmup!), or they may use this time to socialize or just come half an hour later.  Also up for demonstration and discussion are the hammer-on technique, release on upstrum, and 12-bar blues.

We’ll start with a couple of easy, warmup songs, then a couple of new songs, and a couple of challenge songs. If there is time left over we will play some songs from earlier meetings, so please bring at least the files for this month and last month, bring them all if you have them. Feel free to bring a song to share if you like.
